David Chelsea Predicts The New Millennium

As the first decade of the Twenty-first Century draws to a close, it seems an appropriate moment to look back at a time when everyone was looking forward, the years just before the new millennium. Like an ex-girlfriend whose knowledge of obsolete computer languages got her work fixing the supposed Y2K bug, I was able to make a buck off turn-of-the-century fever by illustrating the Millennium Countdown column in the New York Post (I have been an illustrator for all three major New York dailies, but this was my only regular gig for a Rupert Murdoch publication).

New York Times illustration for What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy Marriage by Amy Sutherland

This piece, done for the New York Times Modern Love Column in June 2006, is the gift that keeps on giving. The essay it illustrates, “What Shamu Taught Me About A Happy Marriage” by Amy Killinger Sutherland, became the most e-mailed article on the New York Times website for a time, and later was the basis for a bestselling book. l myself benefited when the author bought the original art for an undisclosed sum.

Pushing The Envelope: Letters To Geoff

I haven’t sent anyone a letter in ages, but back in the pre-digital day l used to send and receive mail all the time. My friend Geoff Seaman is moving, and in an effort to lighten his footprint he just gave me a sack of correspondence I sent him during the years we lived in different cities, from the mid-70’s to the mid-90’s. I’m far too self-conscious to reread any of the old letters, but I am pleased by some of the decorated envelopes, and I’ve posted an album of them here.
